About Katie
I am a Scottish based competition rider. I had my first riding lessons at Dryden when I was 4 years old and that was it... I was addicted to riding. I have had lots of very naughty ponies and have enjoyed hunting with the JedForest Hunt and others since the age of 5. I have progressed through Pony Club achieving all of my Pony Club badges and Pony Club Tests up to my B+ test, I am currently working towards my AH Test and looking to take my UKCC teaching exam. I have produced two youngsters as a child, my 4 year old 13.1hh and my 4year old 14.2hh.
Towards the end of my 13th year I was lucky enough to help Nicky Roncoroni at NBR Eventing at weekends where I learned a lot about the care of and dealing with competition horses. I bought my first ex-racehorse at the age of 14 from Phillipa Shirely-Beven who I had been riding out for at weekends and in my holidays.
My education continued when I went to be a working pupil for International Dressage Rider Kate Paskins during my 7 weeks school holidays. I was lucky enough to live in at Kates and take my ex-racehorse with me. I learned so much from Kate; everything from nutrition to turn out – which was to a very high standard. My riding improved greatly also with excellent advice from Kate. I was a working pupil for Kate for 2 summers and 1 winter.
In 2011 and although still at school I returned to Nicky Roncoroni to help once more. Now more experienced and also more mature I was allowed to hack out Stone Edge and Trig Point as well as schooling one of the young horses Nicky had in the yard to sell. I groomed at my first 3 day event for Nicky at Blair Castle International Horse Trials where she had Arctic Soul in the 1* and Trig Point in the 3*. I then knew for sure that Eventing was what I really wanted to aim towards with my own horses.
I attended Borders College and I completed my SVQ Level 2 Horse Care. Whilst completing this course I had the chance to read up in finer detail on the written side of horses. During the course we had to chance to work with the Starks Feral Ponies which was reported on by Border TV and local radio. I was nominated for the Lantra awards for Best Horse Care Student in Scotland which I was over the moon to win. Not only that but I was awarded Runner-up overall out of all of the agricultural students in Scotland. After leaving college I took on the job of being Sole Charge Groom for Mr and Mrs Vestey at Ormiston. Looking after their hunters, kids’ ponies and bringing on their youngsters. I have worked for the Vesteys for 3 years now and have gained experience of running a yard of up to 8 horses.
